Covid-19 Resurfaces with JN-1 Sub-Variant, Kerala Faces New Challenge
New Delhi: The current generation only heard of pandemics until the globe witnessed the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It was back in 2019 when the whole world suffered because of the Covid-19 pandemic. It wreaked havoc on communities worldwide as millions of people died. And once again, there are chances of things getting worse. It is due to the fact that China is once again grappling with the challenges posed by a new variant of Covid-19, JN-1.
Kerala Faces New Threat with JN-1 Sub-Variant
Recently, Kerala witnessed a surge in Covid-19 cases. The notable increase in number has raised concerns about the potential of a new wave.
The emergence of the JN-1 sub-variant in the state has put health authorities in Karnataka on high alert. Although the rise in cases in Kerala is evident, the majority of patients are reportedly recovering without any extensive medications.
Virologist Dr. Jacob John, in an exclusive interview with TOI, shed light on the situation. He revealed how all sub-variants of the Omicron variant, including JN.1, are comparatively less virulent than their predecessors. Despite this, he acknowledged that JN.1 seems to have a slight advantage in transmission.
A New Sub-Variant in Focus
JN.1, identified within the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, has raised concerns due to its recent detection in Kerala. Although the precise origin of JN.1 remains unclear, it was first reported in Luxembourg, Europe, earlier this month. The variant’s presence in India is now a topic of scrutiny, with Dr. John suggesting that JN.1 could potentially be widespread if thorough testing is conducted.
As we navigate through these uncertain times, health officials and experts are closely monitoring the situation, employing strategies to contain the spread and mitigate the impact of the JN-1 sub-variant.
